What to expect on your first visit

Your first visit will include a very complete dental examination.  In this way we are able to diagnose your unique dental needs, discover your wants and talk with you about how we might fulfill them.  The doctor will examine your mouth for signs of oral cancer and dental abnormalities (such as decay, missing teeth, jaw dysfunction and any defective fillings).  In addition, the doctor will be doing a full periodontal (gum) screening to determine if any disease is present.  In order to be as thorough as possible, radiographs (x-rays) will be taken.  We recommend a full series of 18 films at least every 5 years and yearly bitewing radiographs.  If you have any recent films from your previous dentist please bring them with you, or if possible have the films sent by email to drkelliher@flagshipdental.com.  Also this appointment is a great opportunity to ask any questions you have about your dental health.

If the doctor finds that you need any dental treatment you will be given a written treatment plan.  This plan will detail all work that is proposed by the doctor and the cost associated with the treatment on a visit by visit basis.  For patients fortunate enough to have dental insurance we will most times be able to tell you what portion of the fee that we anticipate insurance will cover.

One of the most common questions we get is why don't you just clean my teeth at the first visit.  The answer is that until we have examined you, we have no idea how long an appointment you will need with the dental hygienist.  Some patients will only require a routine cleaning while others who have periodontal problems may require longer visits to treat their gum disease rather than a simple cleaning.  Our goal is to provide you with the best possible care so we are happy to take the time to ensure that every aspect of your dental care is customized to your particular needs, including your hygiene visits.

Children receive an examination of their teeth and gums, two or four cavity-detecting x-rays and a dental development x-ray, cleaning and fluoride, as well as brushing instructions.  The doctor will also evaluate the dental arch to see if there may be a need for orthodontics (braces) in the future.

If you are being seen for a dental problem (instead of the initial adult visit for exam, cleaning and xrays), the dentist will examine the area and probably take two x-rays. They will then be able to tell you what needs to be done and any additional fees necessary.

Payment for your dental care is expected at the time of service.  We accept cash, personal checks, and credit/debit cards.  We will file your insurance for you, although you will be responsible for any copays or fees that your insurance will not pay at the time of service.  We also offer 12 month NO INTEREST financing for qualifying treatment plans.

We will try to make your dental appointment as pleasurable an experience as possible.

Dentistry now offers many new opportunities for improved health, function and appearance that were unavailable only a few years ago.  Please do not ever hesitate to ask about anything you do not understand. You will be dealing with members of a team whose primary goal is to serve you. We look forward to seeing you.
