Key Tips for Easing Your Invisalign Aligner Discomfort

Have you just begun your Invisalign journey? Congratulations on committing to a healthier and more beautiful smile! However, as excited as you might feel to achieve your results, the journey ahead of you will require some diligence. That said, you might already feel like you’re off to a tough start if you’re dealing with discomfort from wearing the aligners. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to find relief and keep your treatment on track.

Tip #1. Switch to New Aligners at Night

Putting in a new set of aligners right before bedtime allows you to sleep through the initial adjustment phase, when things tend to be the most uncomfortable. By morning, much of the early discomfort will have passed! Sleeping also means you’ll be distracted and not focused on the soreness, as fleeting as it may be.

Tip #2. Stay Consistent with Your Wear Time

It may be tempting to remove your aligners when they begin to feel uncomfortable, but wearing them as directed (20 to 22 hours a day) actually helps your mouth adjust faster and reduces prolonged soreness. Remember, you should only remove your aligners when you need to eat or drink anything other than regular water, or when it’s time to brush your teeth/clean the aligners.

Tip #3. Stick to Soft Foods at First

When starting new aligners, choose soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, soups, broths, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and other similar items. Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods until any tenderness subsides. Of course, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t enjoy any of these items while wearing your aligners; pressure or warm temperatures can lead to cracked or warped plastic that doesn’t fit properly.

Tip #4. Use Cold Compresses

Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the outside of your cheeks can help to reduce inflammation and soothe sore areas during the first day or two. If needed, over-the-counter pain relievers can also help to manage discomfort. Some discomfort is normal, but the pain should never be severe or long-lasting.

If your soreness doesn’t improve after a few days, or if you notice sharp edges, sores, or unexpected issues, contact your dental office right away. Remember, Invisalign discomfort is a sign that your aligners are doing their job, and each adjustment brings you closer to your ideal smile!
